Indeed, why should the mastery of Hebrew have any less importance or priority for a Jew in America than any other foreign language? Jews have a much more compelling reason to learn Hebrew than any other language, and learning Hebrew does not preclude learning any other language one has an interest in.

I had never considered this issue before, even as a Hebrew school teacher before my aliyah in 1987. Thank you for this most interesting discussion

An interesting afterthought: I notice that the immigrants from France, South America and Mexico, in general, have a good working knowledge of Hebrew when they arrive in Israel.
